‘Design Thinking’ has been taught to non-designers for years in the US and Europe and the benefits are now being embraced in New Zealand as well. It’s about helping businesses, organisations and public sector departments create new products or improve a service or even rethink how they do things.

Exponents of the Design Thinking technique use words like ‘emotion, ‘wicked problems, ‘uncertainty’ and ‘learning journeys’... all things that are familiar to the designer but scares the pants off most managers in the corporate world. So it requires real open-mindedness and commitment, but if it’s embraced fully the benefits are huge!

There are many ways of crystallising the process and all advocates have their own formula...
